Frankincense is one of the most special oils mentioned in Scripture. As one of the ingredients of the Holy Perfume in Ex 30:34 it represents Jesus as our High Priest.
The frankincense spoken of in the Bible was the gum of the frank trees. This gum has a white color and therefore its Hebrew name, Laban means… to become white. It symbolizes PURITY! Because it gives off a white, perfumed fragrance when burnt on coals, it is also referred to as … the pathway to prayer.
The white gum is often called: pearls of the desert.
Now as a gift given to the Baby Jesus, it represents Jesus in His priestly duty. Back in the Old Testament, It was the duty of the priest to burn this incense every day as a symbol of their prayers for their nation offered unto God. Its presentation to Jesus showed that, like frankincense, Christ’s role was both to connect with God and … to be God!
2000 years ago, at the exact time of the birth of Christ, the incense trade was at its height. The fragrance of frankincense was the Chanel no 5 of the day! The giving of precious perfumed oils was the highest compliment one person could pay another…
The full fragrance is only released when it’s burned. This burning represents the consuming fire of God. As we submit to the refining fire of God in our lives, the purity of Christ begins to flow through us and the pure love of God will flow through us for one another.
I want to share the revelation of frankincense today by emphasizing it as the fragrance of prayer or… the pathway to prayer! In Rev 5:8, the meaning of incense is connected with intercessory prayer. It says: “Each was holding a harp and they had golden bowls full of incense which are the prayers of God's people (the saints).
Our scripture for today is:
Heb 7:25 Therefore He is able also to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He is always living to make petition to God and intercede with Him and intervene for them.
May this fragrance remind you today that Jesus as your High Priest is interceding for you right now!
